MS Visual Basic 6 Enterprise Edition
Description
Rapidly build business solutions using Microsoft Visual Studio, the complete enterprise development tool suite. Visual Studio allows you to build scalable applications for Windows and the Web that easily integrate with existing systems. The Visual Studio development suite sets the standard for developer productivity and comprehensive design support with integrated features across all the popular languages.
Visual Studio Enterprise Edition includes the complete set of development tools for building reusable applications in Microsoft Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual J++, or Visual FoxPro. In addition Visual Studio Enterprise Edition adds extensive support for large systems and distributed applications.

Cool: The tried and true RAD application is back in its latest version.
Uncool: Unless you’re a die-hard C++ programmer, it’s hard to find
a negative about this one.Come on now. If you’ve been involved in the development industry for even a short time, you no doubt know about Visual Basic, right? This is just one of those applications has always been and will be. For some, it’s almost a religion. I must admit that doing a review on an application like this is difficult, especially if you’re not one of the developers that relies so fully on VB for programming that you would notice even the smallest differences in performance and features.
For me, I had not developed a single line of code in Visual Basic since 1997, until Microsoft sent me this new copy of Visual Basic 6.0 Enterprise Edition for review a couple of months back. Additionally, it was not a review product that I was expecting, so it kind of took me off-guard when I got the FedEx shipment containing it. Fortunately, I have worked with both Visual Basic 4.0 and 5.0, so I at least had a knowledge of its predecessors and knew at least some of what to look for in any changes that Microsoft had made to this icon of visual development environments.
At first look, for those who have used Visual Basic 5.0, you’re not going to notice a lot of difference between this version and the last. Many of the astronomical changes that had been made to Visual Basic were actually in version 5.0, and many of the improvements to Visual Basic 6.0 are actually under the surface, similar to the differences between Windows 95 and 98.
On a related topic, if you’re just venturing into the world of programming, Visual Basic a nice place to start. As the proponents of other programming languages will quickly state, Visual Basic does have its limitations and specific applications in the enterprise development arena, but due to its nearly total visual nature, it introduces newer programmers to the concepts of programming, while at the same time allowing them to visualize what they’re working with, as opposed to throwing thousands of lines of code at them, while they try to mentally visualize the abstract end-result they will get after a successful compile. I know for myself, this was one of the most difficult areas in studying programming, and Visual Basic was of great use in overcoming it. Guess I just use the left-side (or was it the right-side?) of my brain too much to mentally visualize an end-product from a mathematical algorithm.
The above mentioned limitations of Visual Basic though hasn’t stopped Microsoft from attempting to promote Visual Basic as a solution for enterprise-scale development, as the name of this specific edition implies. Rightly enough, Visual Basic does have its place in enterprise computing, and Visual Basic 6.0 gives you all of the tools you’ll ever need to take full advantage of the programming power that it has to offer. As in version 5.0, this latest version has a very intuitive interface and wizards which allow you to accomplish a lot with very little effort. One thing in particular I’ve always liked about Visual Basic was being able to create nearly all of your boiler-plate (basic) coding simply by clicking a few buttons of a wizard interface. From there, it’s merely a drag-and-drop completion (after setting a few variables of course) before you have a functional application that is market-ready. Of course, that may be a bit of an over-simplification of the process, but in essence, there is little more to do.
For the Visual Basic pros out there, I almost certainly don’t have to go on about the benefits of this latest edition, but for those who are just getting started, let me say that Visual Basic 6.0 will be a huge asset to your development efforts, while letting you make the most of the skills you possess in this programming language.
